Feeding baby horsfield
« on: January 31, 2006, 04:50:16 AM »
Hi all,

After a bit of help - I have a 1 year old horsfield who arrived with me on friday.  He has been drinking and I have offered food, but as yet he has refused.  He doesn't seem interested in eating at all and I'm a little worried!  i have a UVB light, basking light (temp 78) in a well ventilated indoor table.  He seems healthy with bright eyes and clear nose / mouth.  Any ideas?  Or am I worrying about nothing? ???

Hi Boo,

He's probably just settling in. What food are you offering him?

Hi again.  Have just realized that your basking light is 78.  It should be around 90 at the hot end of his enclosure and around 70 at the cool end (and no heat at night when indoors).  I think they need the warmer temperatures to get their digestive juices going, so try raising the temperature at the hot end (bring the basking light closer to the floor until it reaches the right temperature).  It's really good that he's drinking though.

He may be too cold. Under the basking light it should be 90-95°F

Also you state he is one year old. Did you get him from a breeder?
How big is he?

Thank you all for the advice! Moved the light so the temp increased and he started eating like a little pig!

Thanks again!  :D

As soon as I get some I'll post them up!

Joe you asked about size - he's about 3", bought him from a tortoise trust approved breeder.

the best way is to post them at  http://www.russiantortoisepictures.com/gallery2/main.php

1) go to the picture and right click on it. Select view image

2) in the  post coposistion box select the image tag

3)Insert the link between the image commands
