Memory lost...

Does anyone know how the memory works in rts? I know they have bad memory but they remember the hand that feeds them and where they live right? I used to hand feed my tort his regular diet for a year and he was really cautious around me and didn't like it when I hold him. It was like he doesn't remember that I am the same person as yesturday and I will not hurt him.
I started an experiment and now when I get home from work I give him his treats, like carrots, cactus, apples, etc. in my hand. Since I started doing this, when he hears my voice, he wants to come out of his cage and he follows me around the house... It is really cute 
So I wonder about his memory... Does he remember me (like can he recognize my voice, face, etc.) that I give him delicious stuff or is it instinct?

I think they remember, but that is only my opinion not scientific n research

In the summer a few of my WC breeder females follow me around the yard when I get home from work. They seem to know they can get flowers that way.

Thank you for the posts I think they should have some sort of memory too. Couple of days ago Lucky was wondering around in my room and my boyfriend open the door and it hit him  ( he is ok) For two days everytime Lucky was hearing my boyfriend's voice, he would hide in his shell and make that hissing sound.
I think they are smart and aware of what is going on around them, dispite what some people might think

When I pick up Nikolai, I put my hand underneath him and lift him up so that we're face to face.  As soon as he sees my face, he immediately stops moving around and seems to relax.  I always talk to him for a few minutes.  I can't be sure, but I'd like to think that he recognizes my face and/or my voice and knows that I'm the person who feeds and takes care of him.

I agree, Sara, that they're much smarter than some people give them credit for.  The fact that they each have a distinct personality seems to offer some proof of intelligence.

I think the torts have good memorys, when i let mine wander around the house when its cold weather they always go to the same parking spots ! and weve got a very long hall they stroll up and down it and often sit on the mat in front of the wood burning stove. If the cats are there first, they always get up and make way for the little guys. Its so sweet.

They actually have better memory than most people think. For instance, I put 4 RTs on my balcony this summer. I originally made a sleeping space with dirt they could comfortably sleep in. They all started sleeping there each night on my balcony. After that, I added a lot more stuff to the balcony - kiddie pools full of dirt they could enter, more bins with entrances, etc. Each day they walk around and into all the different areas I've added. BUT, each night at bedtime, they go back to the SAME bin they started sleeping in originally. All of them recognize that as their bed. Like clockwork at around 6pm, they all navigate through the maze and go back to this same sleeping area. They could have slept anywhere else on that balcony, but they recognize that as their bed. I think that's pretty cool...
