About to lay eggs?
«
on:

Hi,
I have an indoor male and female RT and my female has been digging with her back legs and making mounds with the substrate. Just curious is this is egg laying behavior? And if so, what do I need to do to prepare? Thanks!

You will need a section with deeper substrate for her to dig in for a start.

You might also want to have an incubator on hand, so you're prepared.

Thanks! We put some more substrate in and she started digging right away. And we have an incubator on the way.
How long will it be after she starts digging her test nests? Will my male leave her alone when she is laying eggs or should I take him out?

The females can usually control the males when their gravid. It seems as if they know to leave them alone. Sometimes mine lay in the first hole, other times they dig test holes for weeks.

GOOD NEWS! My tortoise had two eggs today!!!
We ordered an incubator last friday but it is not here yet. What should we do in the meantime? We have extra heat lamps or basking lamps if those work. Let me know quick! Thanks!!!

Don't rotate the eggs!!
Mark the top with a pencil, so you don't get confused.
Put them in a container with some of you're substrate & keep them warm. 85F-89F. They don't have to be buried, I usually bury mine 1/2 way so they don't roll.

Thanks!
We did not rotate them and have them lightly marked. Right now the temp is at 86 or so and I have a moist paper towel on the top of them. The incubator should be here tomorrow so I hope they will be ok!!!

Incubator came today! We are setting it up and trying to maintain a constant temp. around 86 or 87. The incubator came with a substrate that is called hatch rite that the eggs will sit on. There is a tray underneath that has water in it to maintain humidity. I hope everything is right! Now we will just wait!
