RedFoots in Arizona
« on: September 14, 2006, 05:44:12 PM »
I have a friend that bought a RedFoot from Petco here in Arizona and then she  did her research and thought maybe this climate wasn't the best for them and took her back- after she was all attached to her tort.  The the associate from Petco told her Arizona has the highest mortality rate for that species and sold her a Greek. Granted they need more humidity and moisture but as a RedFoot owner myself, I provide that environment for them inside the home and once they are old enough to go outside, will do the same.
I asked her why then, are they selling them here in Az? Petco is a great place to buy dog/cat and that's about it........

No offense to anyone here but in my opinion PETCO is like WAL-MART.  They usually have "everything" and a lot of it.  They have money to make stuff move in their direction and after a buildup of momentum the competition doesn't really matter anymore.  Either does what your selling.  Again in my opion, like WAL-MART, PETCO  has a very large disconnect between what they are selling and who they are.  When I go to a pet store I'm not so much interested in knowing what the cheapest deal in the house is or whether or not one has a membership to your club of disattached pet owners.  Granted their reptile department isn't exactly the worst anyones seen compared to other places, but it sure it lacking in many aspects.  They sell a lot of gimmickery, but then again so does WAL-MART.  But their just the biggest players in the game and that puts them in the spotlight because what it all boils down to is when a Russian Tortoise tucks his head in at night; one hailed from PETCO -- I just wonder how they feel.  Somewhat disrupting thinking about what they all must go through, and how their all piled up on top each other in a kiddie-fishtank with pellet substrate.

I apologize that, that turned into a blabby rant, but that was bound to come out sometime.

Rantings are welcome !   What kills me is his statement about the mortality rate. I mean, where is he getting his information to support is statement? Taking a survey at the door?  I have never heard that.
And I'm sure the breeder I got my RedFoots from wouldn't sold them to me if that was the case.

It may just be that they hear about the ones they sell and don't make it. This is more from poor care information rather than location

I agree, I believe anyone can have a tortoise in any location as long as they give it proper care. I live in PA and I keep all my tortoises and turtles in the basement in the winter with proper temps and uvb lights. Then when the snow melts and temps warm up they go outside.

Kind of off topic... I never buy pets at pet stores (excepting torts). I got my dog and cat from the humane society, and they're great.

Sorry, I mean to say dog/cat FOOD ..... and you are right, go to a rescue for  dogs/cats as pets. I got my dog from the Az Chi Rescue.  After what I've learned here about buying tortoises from Petco/Petsmart, I will never do it again. I've been lucky with the ones I have gotten from them.  My RedFoots came from a wonderful breeder out of state and I know they were well cared for and would be healthy. You pay more but it's worth it.
