Inside food
« on: October 20, 2006, 04:18:03 AM »
Hi Everyone,
I have 2 RTs, Clark and Ellen.  Clark eats regularly (pretty much anything I'll feed him), but within the past month, Ellen has stopped eating the greens I provide (she was once a better eater than Clark).  I was concerned at first, but noticed that when they go for their daily walk outside, she eats the flower leaves and the grass.  Since I live in NJ, and it's getting much colder here, soon they won't be able to go outside and I'm afraid Ellen won't eat anything at all.  Does anyone have any recommendations?  I've tried feeding Clark and Ellen separately, but she still won't eat.  Any advice would be helpful!

How long have you had your torts?  Have you noticed any other behavioral changes in Ellen?  Has she been checked for parasites?  Is she emptying her bowels fairly regularly?

I've only had them since the beginning of August.  Ellen does not empty her bowels that often anymroe.  She has been check (and treated) for pinworms.  My concern is, though, if she does have worms, how can I give her the medicine if she won't eat?  I had the vet give her a dose once (forcefully b/c she wouldn't take it) and i have a feeling it was kind of traumatic for her.  Her energy is still strong, and she's very active when outside.

Just a guess here but if she`s active and eating outside then i`d say she`s just sulking and not happy to be indoors. When the weather got cooler here and i brought my torts indoors for winter one of them just stayed in bed and stopped eating i knew she was just sulking. Just an idea for you!

She might also be doing this cooler weather, slowing down in preparation for hibernation thing that a lot of torts and their owners are experiencing right now.  Though it does seem a little strange that one tort is acting that way and not the other.

my females are much more docile right now than the males, who are too busy with their "rutting season", while the females are happy to snuggle in for a long winter's nap. The males are no different than a mountain goat with their clonking heads and exuding testosterone (sry guys, no offense intended  ;))

Hi Everyone...just wanted to give you an update on Ellen.  I moved Clark and Ellen to a room that's a little warmer and gets more sunlight and (yay!) the next day Ellen started eating again, and she's been eating everyday for 2 weeks now.  I guess a few degrees in temp can really make a difference.  If anyone else is having this problem, check the thermometer..it might help! :)

This is probablly a silly question but, what exactly does RT poop look like? Sometimes I see thick white stuff almost like sand in bertas water hole. Is that it??
