Need some medication advice.
« on: November 07, 2010, 10:12:18 AM »
So, I have two redfoot tortoises with URI. They were both rescues from some shabby places, and they both had it when I got them.

I've been to the vet twice for both of them. The vet I went to prescribed Ceftazidime 100/mg/ml injections every three days for 3 weeks.

I did the three week run with the injections, but I didn't notice an improvement. I took them back to the vet, and she said that sometimes it just takes a long time for them to show improvement...and then put them on a second 3-week run of the Ceftazidime.

But they're already halfway through their 3-week period, and I'm STILL not seeing any improvements! They're still as sneezy and mucusy as they were before.

The vet said she was giving me the strongest broad-spectrum URI medication...so if the strongest medication isn't working, what am I to do?! I really feel helpless here. I've been doing all I can to help them get better, not just with regular vet visits and medication, but therapy at home; increasing temperatures and humidity, daily warm soaks, and giving them multivitamins at every feeding.

Does anyone know of any other medication they can recommend for URI in tortoises? I really just want my babies to get better. I hate watching them stay sick for so long. :(

Ask your vet if a culture & sensitivity could be done on the mucus.  This would determine what type of bacteria are causing the URI so the appropriate antibiotic could be used.

Okay, I'll definitely ask her, thank you. :)
