weight gain
« on: October 29, 2006, 02:29:27 PM »
Hi I am new to this forum, I bought a RT 2 weeks ago. It is 2 1/2 years old. Can anyone tell me how much weight it should put on? I am worried I am feeding it too much (only gets a variety of weed & occassional other). It has put on 16 grams in 2 weeks going from 118g to 134g. I have read so many articles but have not found anything about how much is normal weight gain. Thanks. ???

2-4gm`s a month is safe and healthy for a good and lovely smooth shell growth. It is natural as humans to want to feed more, they look at us and say give me more but please try not too. In the wild they would walk miles for a tiny bit of food and only stay awake 3 months of the year. If you think of this then you`ll realise that overfeeding is so bad for them. At 2 years old your tort should be about 95g`s ish. Its worth investing in some digital scales and aim for the 2-4 gm`s a month. No more or you`ll have an overgrown tort with a lumpy shell. One of mine put on 12 grams one month due to being fed on demand and being lazy and her shell looks awful in that part, never again. I stopped her growing dead with normal feeding, she`s so much better now she`s still the same weight but her shell and health are so much better. It doesnt matter what others peoples torts weight remember that. If you want some links and more information please pm me. Good luck,  ;) (Aim for slow growth, it should take 7-10 years+ for your tort to reach optimum weight)

What is optimum weight for a 7yr old female? She's already attained the 6".

to get a good idea measure the width, length and height. Then use the
following formula
with all measurements in centimeters (to convert inches to centimeters
multiply inches by 2.54 or visit http://www.convert-me.com/en/)

Multiply this by .57  to get weight in grams

so its  (height x length x width) x .57= weight in grams
