Tortoise Not Drinking Water
« on: June 29, 2011, 11:01:15 AM »
My tortoise is three years old I have had him for about a year now, but he never seems to drink his water, I always put out his water bowl for him. also when I give him a soak he doesnt drink the water.

Should I get a bigger water dish so he can climb in it?

Or do they generally don't drink much?

It is very rare to see them drink. I've only caught Thor once; some people have never seen their's drink at all.

Yes, it would be a good idea.  Some torts love to sit in their water dishes, some love to use them as a toilet, too. :)

My tortoises all have shallow water dishes large enough that they can fit in them - we use shallow ceramic saucers that are used under plant pots.  When I change their water I make sure it's not cold - just slightly warm - and I set them in it.  Although sometimes they climb out right away, many times I see them take some good gulps first.  In fact, often I see them wiping their faces with water before getting out.
