new tortoise help
« on: November 13, 2006, 02:53:28 AM »
Hi there, I just got my first ever Russian Tortoise about 5 days ago, and he's great, but I'm concerned.  I haven't seen him eat or drink at all and I'm just worried he's going to starve.  I took him to get a checkup already at a specialist vet and she gave him a clean bill of health, including two separate clean stool samples (outside of apparently a few red and white blood cells).  All he seems to want to do is either bury himself in the substrate (timothy hay) or go hide in his little log house in the back corner.  I've tried to set him both near his water and his food bowl (I'm giving him Romain) but he just turns away and goes to hide.  I have one light for heat and UVA and one for UVB, both of which are on from 8AM until 10PM, keeping the temps at 85-ish on one side and 75-ish on the other, with a humidity of about 45%.  At night the temps drop to about 68.

While I have tried to read as much as possible about proper tortoise care (and grilled the vet about it) I don't know why my pet isn't eating or drinking or doing much of anything.  I come home everyday from work checking on it and hoping it's not dead.  Can any of you more experienced people give me any idea what's going on with my tortoise?  Is it uncomfortable?  Is it trying to hibernate?  What should I do?

When you come home from work, get him/her out of her enclosure, and give an hour of your time handling her. Get her confidence, and let her smell you, let her walk about your lap,  and  see if she will let you stroke her under her chin. Then maybe she will take some food from you. I'm sure for any animal it must be pretty traumatic moving to another place, another smell et cetera. Thats the only advice I can offer, as it worked for me and mine...

I`d would give daily baths and just feed garden weeds, feed after bathing and just leave them in the enclosure. They take in water from their back ends alot, lol. Don`t worry it`ll take him a good couple of weeks to settle in, if he doesnt eat don`t worry they can survive longer without food but not water.  If hes pet shop bought he`ll be wild caught and so he wont be used to being handled and will be shy, on the whole i think its normal behaviour, just give him time to settle in hes probably petrified. Up the temps on the warm side to 95.  ;)

Congrats on your new tort!  They are nifty little buggers.  When we first got Rassy he didn't really eat either, so we got danelion leafs, and man did those go quick.  try a bunch of different food to see what he likes... cucumber is big for my boy.  But every tort is different.

I am a new owner to a russian tort as well. I completley understand about coming home and hoping she wasnt dead! YOu will be paranoid for awhile. Im sure he/she is just getting used to the new home you have made for him. This forum and website www.russiantortoise.org is the best place to come! Everyone is so helpful and so nice. Good luck with your new tort!

mine also did that when I first got them.  It just takes some time to settle it.  Helmut, my first tort, didn't eat for 3-4 days, then suddenly (i guess he got hungry enough) he just started to go to town and ate and ate and ate.  It also took him a little bit to get his strength back b/c the pet store kept him in a small cage  >:(   So, don't worry, your tort will be fine.

One thing I'm having trouble with is keeping the temp up on the warm side.  What is the consensus on heating pads?  I've heard arguments both for and against, and because of that I wanted to stay away from it as long as I didn't need it, but on the recommendation of my vet I sprung for the $80 UVA/UVB bulb and now my warm end is hovering between 85-80 degrees.  I live in the northeast, so I'm a little concerned going into winter.  Also, I'm currently housing in a 50 gal glass aquarium.  I know there's alot of people who swear against the glass, but I'm worried about the temps dropping even more if I switch to Tupperware.  Also, if my little guy already isn't eating, drinking, or pooping, I don't want to freak him out any more then I have to with constant changes.

On a side note, I did soak him today for about 20 min and then let him sit in my lap on a towel for a bit.  It almost looked like he was about to eat too, but alas nothing.  He also made a few noises which sounded like deep sudden inhales.  He usually breathes silently, but once when the food was in front of him and another when he was in the water he did this.  He was also bobbing his head a bit, randomly.  It almost looked like a person hiccuping with their mouth closed.  Are these anything I should be concerned about, enough at least to make a vet visit?

Sorry for all the questions, but also I was wondering, my turtle seems to kind of push himself around when he moves as opposed to a true walk.  Do they ever lift their shell up off the ground and walk?  Is this a sign of trouble?  Again I appologize, but I just want to make sure my little guy gets the best care possible.

Get your tort out of the aquarium immediately this can cause the problems youre describing, if you`ve got nothing to put him in right now, put him in a drawer with the lamp over one end, this is so important to do and will make a massive difference.
Have you tried looking into getting a ceramic heat bulb for extra heat, heat pads can cause burns if placed on the floor.
If his breathing was immediately after or during his bath and he hasnt done it since he may just have water up his nose especially if his heads wet. If its constantly then it might be rns which needs immediate vet treatment. Keep a very close watch on him.
He should be holding his shell up high and walking with ease. He must have a severe lack of calcium to not be able to hold up his shell and you need immediate vets advice.
Remember to find a good reptile vet as a normal vet wont know how to treat your tort properly.
Keep us updated on progress.  ;)

Does he push himself instead of a true walk even on the floor? Or just inside his enclosure?

The active uvb bulb gets the surface temp 90-95 degrees in the rubbermaid tub, so don't worry about it being too cold when you make the switch (that is, if you bought the 100 watt flood bulb, like t-rex).

Don't worry about the head bobbing, torts do that occasionally, he could have been nervous.

My tort is also doing what you have described as "hiccups" I took her to the vet and was told she needs a really great calcium supplement. Alot of people have suggested TNT. Im also a new owner of a RT and have decided to make the change to a tupperware container untill my husband builds us a tort table. I suggest you do the same. If possible get to a vet who knows about reptiles. Dont worry about asking too many questions its the only way you will learn. Plus the people on this forum are fantabulous!!!  The best forum in the world when it comes to people who really know their stuff. CONGRATS on your new tort and good luck!

OK, so after all the help you people have given me I have to share this story of my CRAZY night.

My roomate and I left around 6-ish to go to Target and pick up the 50 gal. tub you all have been recommending to me.  The store's a couple of miles away from our apartment, and she wanted to get some other things there too, so we ended up taking about half an hour before returning home.  We live on the second floor, so as we were walking up the stairs to our front door, we both started to smell something and looked at each other.  She said "Whose got the peperoni?" and I looked at her and replied "Actually, it smells to me like someone is smoking."  So we get up to our door and I unlock the door and open it and what do I see?  Our apartment is FULL of smoke!

I just stood there in bewilderment for a few seconds because literally it was so thick I couldn't see the other side of our living room (trust me, it's not that big).  My roomate yelled at me to go inside and see what had happened so I put my enormous bin down to hold the door open, wet inside, and  looked around.  As soon as I looked to my left my stomach dropped: While we were gone, my heating lamp had fallen off the side of my tank and landed face down in the timothy hay lining the bottom, and worse, it was exactly over where my tortoise (his name is Max) had borrowed into.  The hay was burning and black, and instantly I just knew Max was done.  I couldn't bear the thought of seeing what was left of him in there, so I ran to open the windows to vent the smoke while my roomate grabbed Gus, her Pug puppy that she's had for about 4 months from his cage.  I picked up the lamp, which was still on amazingly, even though the rubber clamp had melted and the entire hood was singed, so I unplugged it.  The smoke was so thick though that we both just ran right back out.

After we got outside, she asked me "What about Max?" and I told her I though he was done for.  She told me to go up and check just to be sure and try to put the fire out, so I ran back up the stairs and over to the tank.  When I got back up the hay was still burning, so filled up a large bowl with water and dumped it on the side of the tank where the fire was.  It didn't completely go out so I filled up another bowl and threw that on too, and that pretty much took care of any burning I saw.  Everything looked black and I was just so scared to see what had become of Max that I got a long straining spoon and just started to poke through the charred side of the tank, moving the grass around.  I couldn't seem to find the shell so I started to look as I poked.  He wasn't there!  At this point I was like "Where the heck is he?"  So I tried poking around the rest of the tank, and low and behold I hit a shell just to the left of the fire.  I uncovered the grass and found Max and picked him up to see if he was still moving and his eyes were open and alert and everything!  I quickly grabbed a nearby shoebox and ran him outside and away form the smoke to examine him further.  Looking at him I was amazed to see there were no burns on him at all, nothing was swollen and he seemed to be perfectly normal.  Our next door neighbors brought over some fans to help vent the smoke so we waited in their apartment for a few hours, during which time I held Max for a bit and set him on my lap.  It's amazing, but he actually seems to be more active now then he has been to this point so far.  He walked around on their coffee table for a while and later tried to burrow into my stomach when he was sitting on my lap.  When the apartment was habitable again we went back up to clean everything up, and I put together what we had left of Max's old tank habitat into the rubbermaid tub with about a bad of hay and put him in there and he walked around for a bit before burrowing himself in for the night.

All in all I lost a $100 glass tank (the glass cracked on the fire side) that I was going to take back, a clamp light, a thermometer, and a small fake plant.  The bulb, although a little singed on the sides, amazing still works.  Most importantly, Max made it through apparently OK (I'm calling the vet tomorrow of course just to make sure) and seems very happy so far with his new environment.  I also got him a "turtle bone" to see if that will help with his calcium intake and of course you can bet I'm going to bring that up tomorrow as well.  Thank all of you for helping with all of this.  I'll keep you all posted on how my little superhero's doing.  :D

Wow, what a true nightmare :(. I'm so glad everyone's ok and little Max wasn't injured ;D. Might I suggest using the little C clamps on your clamp lamps, as they keep them from falling, then you won't have to worry about another fire mishap. I use them and they give me a peace of mind. Let us know how Max is doing!
