New baby Russian Tort.
« on: March 16, 2006, 02:59:14 PM »
Greetings all!
I just aquired a very small Russian tort - under 3". I have set her up in a rubbermaid tub (as I understand anything see through is not good?) The substrate the reptile shop suggested was rabbit pellets as they liked to dig and it stays fairly dry. They also suggested a hide box with a bedding of damp bed a beast as well as the timothy hay. I read here about the substrate mixture of sand and bed a beast and might try that. Is there any red flags about the rabbit pellet substrate in the meantime?

Any suggestions or thoughts on care of a teeny tort? She is captive born. Eating well and very active.

Thanks!

Hi Wayne
Welcome to the group!

I started my first hatchling on rabbit pellets...11 years ago

Within months he was showing pyramiding and leg and tail deformities.

The pellets are far too dry and the torts will eat them. When they get a little wet they mold easily.  They are not good for torts.
