Indoor Care for Red Foot Tortoise
« on: December 07, 2006, 07:46:39 PM »
Does anyone have some suggestions on what to grow for an indoor tortoise table?  The climate here (Oregon) is too cold outside during the winter.  My redfoot tortoise pretty much either eats or tramples over what I have grown in less than 2 weeks.   I have tried growing grass and clover but it seems either not to grow fast enough.  Any suggestions?

A while back Joe Heinen suggested that I plant in small pots and place the pots in the indoor pen etc.
This way, as your tort eats or tramples, it is easier to replace the plant etc.  I have used this suggestion very successfully.  I am getting ready to plant some chia seeds, and will do the same.  Ideally it would be nice to be able to plant in the soil within the pen, but it is not always practical.  Louise loves her live plants just the same even if they are potted./// ::)

At this time of year i  plant weed seeds indoors and keep them on the window sill along with pansy plants and other plants that they can eat. I keep all plants throughout the winter in seperate containers not placed inside the tort enclosures as they can easily overfeed and grow too quickly in winter. If i were you i`d leave edible plants till summer when they will burn off the energy and just put in a lavender or similar plant in for now for a natural hiding spot.  Lavender is safe but they rarely eat it. ;)
