Help me!Please!!
« on: December 28, 2006, 02:52:21 PM »
Ok so I am at a loss right now. A woman...who used to be on this site gave me her tortoise for my daughter for Christmas. Needless to say, Christmas mornign my 4 year old was in shock. Of course he wasn't her first Tortoise, but he was unique! An over grown beak and a few minor old injuries made him special for her. All was great for Christmas....

Until the next morning. I woke up to discover, my elder female had perished on top of her nesting spot, and below her lifeless body were 4 eggs. She had not layed eggs in the last 8 years. I take her to the vet regularly and they said her age prevented her from having more eggs. I never wanted her to have any in the first place. Once the vet told me she was infertile I placed her with an elder male, yes they were both past peak sexual maturity. I almost got exited about the eggs, but when I though of my poor tortoise, she was such a big part of our family. I don't know what to tell my daughter she is way too young to comprehend death quite yet. I am trying to put one that looks like her in there for now. But since I adopted all of mine I am not sure where to get another adult female. If any one knows please let me know. I live in Rhose Island and the pet stores here keep their tortoise is such bad conditions I don't want one from them. Who knows what type of desease or parasites they may have.

Dear Michelle,

I am so sorry for your loss.  It is terrible when one loses a beloved part of the family. :(

I love in FL and therefore I cannot be of much help to you.
How old was your tort that passed?

Sorry to hear about your loss. Have you tried searching for a reptile breeder in your area?

Sorry to hear about your tort. It is so sad to lose a pet who you obviously loved. I lost my hamster the day before Christmas eve due to a rectal prolapse. She was old and like your tort had a lot of love. Take care

I had her 13 years...but she was my mothers before me..and some one else before that so exact age was unknown.A male wouldn't do. She was an abnormaly large female at 10 inches . A rare find and I have never seen one as big as her.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss.   I have a female that age (11 inches), and my heart breaks at the thought of losing her.  Do you have an incubator?  Is this your first clutch?  Wish I could do something to help.

I read somewhere that the average age of a RT is about 25-30 years.  Or perhaps that is the average recorded age.  Does anyone know for sure?  Other torts live to be over 100, but for some reason the RTs do not.

I've read in several places (and even on here but of course I can't find it when I want to quote it) that rt's live somewhere between 50-80 years.  Of course depending on environment, health care and so on but it's still a long term comittment for sure.

The oldest russian I have ever had that I knew of the age of it was 47 years old. I am not sure exactly how old pippi was to be exact. Like I said she was my moms first and some one elses before her. So I am guessing she was extreemly old. I am having no luck finding another like her. I tried to make a good thing out of it and am looking for a needy tortoise to adopt now. One with health issues or one that needs special care due to neglegence. There are so many out there, as soon as I come accross one that could really use the help I will let you all know.

Also, in reguards to the egg question. Nope this is far from my first clutch of eggs. And I have a few incubators. I have dealt with russian hatchlings before, as well as box turtles, spotted, res turtles, map turtles and wood turtles. Some of you would ask if I am a breeder right lol? No I am not. It just so happens that nature takes it's course a lot around here. I spread the hatchlings between family members, friends and myself usualy. But this time..since they are pippi's babies. I am keeping them all. I found 2 more under the bread box they hide in. Not sure how they got way over there but I am glad they were. I may end up with many more torts than I bargained for.But it's so worth it. I am sure most of you can relate to that.

Hi Michelle,

It sounds as if Pippi had a very good life with you and your mom.  I am heartened that you will keep the hatchlings from her eggs. :)

Have you checked out Julie Maguire's site:  LongIslandTurtleRescue.com    ?

She rehabilitates tortoises and turtles and may be of assistance.  She is very helpful and knowledgable like Joe and also very kind.  She provides an adoption application on her website.  If you complete it she can place you on a waiting list.

Hope this helps
Donna

Whoa!  Turbotort, this is great.  Thanks for sharing this with us.  It makes me feel so much better knowing that Louise will most likely outlive me.  Now, I just need to make sure she will be well cared for after I pass away :'(

Thanks again for sharing this with us.

Donna :)
