Just for you Autumn 33. This is Hermione's cage. As she is only a little tort 78mm long she has enough room for now. She also has a 4foot x 4 foot run which I made for the living room so she can have a good run around. You can see Hermione in the corner - half hidden. She put her nose out to see what I was up to as I was talking to her letting her know what I ws doing! Is this insanity setting in???  ;)

Now that is pretty cool I really like it. I went to Wahl mart the other day and they had this big old tubs there, so I got one I don't know how many gallon it is but it is 4 feet long and about 16 inches wide. The tub I have now is not that big.

Yeah, they are a really cool idea! I am deffinately going to get one soon! Oscar has only just settled into his new home so i don't want to move him just yet! I'm going to look at one on thursday for him  ;D ;D

Susan - are the temparatures easy to maintain/control in them?

KayMarie please get a tub and put your tort in this it will really be better for the tort and they don't cost so much, I know there are lots of opinions out there but I truly believe that a tub would be better, and you could sale the vivarium. and make some money on it.

Under the basking light after it has been on for about 15 mins the thermometer reads 90C. It will get up to 95 later on so a good area for basking. The other side of the cage is about 60C in the morning (the house central heating goes off about 11pm and I switch the basking light off about then too). With the house central heating on the cooler side of the cage goes to about 70C. I would imagine that if we get a really cold snap that the night temps could go colder than the 60C but will have to see what happens when that happens so afr we have not had any below freezing nights here in Liverpool. I would probably leave the heating on on a lower setting if it became too cold for my benefit as well as the torts!!!! I do have the tort's lights on timers so the basking light can come on early in the morning.

She takes a while to get going in to the butties but she eventually eats them. She is quite happy at eating from my fingers (not lost any fingers yet). She definately seems a lot livelier since she has been having them so they must be doing her some good. Thank you.

Lol, long story. Well basically i`ve been feeding up my sick tortoise with cucumber butties 3 times a week to fatten her up. I slice a piece of very wafer thin cucumber. I pack it with TNT,Optuna, nutrabol, limestoneflour, + my own mix of dried weeds. Yes it`s totally packed full, anyway since i`ve done this my sick tort has come on no end and her weight has gone up tremendously. Which i`m very happy about. Susan has a new tort and was looking for a way to get some vits down her so i suggested trying this which she is now doing and it seems to be perking Hermione up aswell, so all good.  ;)

Hi 4kids, I hope you are still having fun with your new tort.  I just wanted to add my two cents in that you shouldn't leave the heat bulb on 24 hours since your house stays warm enough.  If a tort doesn't cool down enough at night time it can effect eating behavior.  Also, I agree with getting those pellets out as they are terribly dehydrating and they will mold after you mist to keep up humidity.  One last thing, if you are handy at growing plants you might want to buy some seeds from Joe.  He has a great variety of organic seeds of plants that are very easy to grow and the torts love.  Torts really should be eating weeds if they can and the ones he has are awesome.  In fact, when you get the tort table built you can plant them in the table as well.  That helps maintain humidity and they can then graze which is more natural.  Don't worry though, it takes a while to get everything dialed in.  It took me about a month to get things stable and luckily torts are really resilient.  Have fun and keep up the good work.

4kids...how cold does your house get during the night? It wasn't posted that I could see.  If it's too cold, you can use a heat emitter for warmth (has no light), they need darkness and to cool down at night as long as the temps are not too cold as previously stated in an earlier post.  I'd love to see a picture of your new addition if you have one :).
