BREEDING QUESTION
« on: January 09, 2007, 08:18:17 AM »
As many of you already know I am adopting a very needy female tortoise tomorrow. She has major curving of the shell, an over grown beak, and is very over weight. Had been living on a diet of carrots and lettuce. Not healthy! I have two male Russians, one is unfertile, and old he does not bother to attempt mating. The newest Max, who I also adopted but in great health. Is very frisky with the females. I had one that recently passed away and he used to chase her like crazy!!! Now I want to put them together after my vet gives her a full clean bill of health. However I do not want them to mate, as it may not be very safe for her considering her status aside from health. She is over grown and chubby, the wieght and bloating will take a long time to reduce and I worry that if she does carry eggs, it could be vital to her life. Does anyone have a sugestion? I would hate to keep her alone, and want Max and Klyde to get to know her...but...like I said I worry.

Maybe a see through devider. I am working on a tripple crate. Right now my two are in a single. The one I am building right now is A full crate 4 foot by 3 foot, it has just bed a beast, and a few other substrates along with timothy hay and iva/uvb lights. Then around the bend goes into a half crate, this is where a large pan of water will be found along with substrates for walking on , turning again into a new half sized crate which has logs and rocks to climb on and plenty of space to move about. The last turn is another FULL sized crate, this one has the food in it, and fresh weeds growing. LOL It is a giant tortoise maze. The reason for this is to keep them moving. They will have to leave the main crate in seach of water, and leave that area in search of food climbing logs in the process. This is a good way to exercise them and give them a great variety of spaces and substrates to move through. More out door like...Only indoors.

I was thinking of maybe deviding the food crate half and half, ading to the crate in the opposite direction with a new crate full of substrate and a water pan. Then another crate the just meets but can't enter the main crate on the other side where the males will be burrowing. This way they can experience eachothers company...with out experiencing eachother....lol

Hi, She will be ecstatically happy on her own and probably miserable with another tort around. As you must know in nature russian torts bump into each other maybe once a year, mate quickly then run away as quick as they can from each other, theyre far happier alone, it`s a human emotion to feel  loneliness. Don`t put up a see throuh divider, i`ve done that before and my torts spent most of the time sitting looking at each other, it`s cruel to tempt them but not to let them have contact with another tort. I`ve never heard of an infertile or over age`d tort, but i assume you`ve had them from a bad home and are rehabilitating them. i`d keep her seperate if you feel she needs a companion then look for another rescue female that you can help, good luck!!

WOW! That sounds like one Cool enclosure! I'd love to see it when it's done, this way I'll have a few Ideas I can Steal off of you! LOL! I hope all goes well for you & the new Female Tort you will be rescuing tomorrow.

BTW, Michelle,
I have a lot of Roofing Slates if you are interested in adding some to your new enclosure. I can drop as many as you would like! They are all the Light Gray color slate. I had the Dark Gray (almost Black when it's wet) But, I had a thief in my Area & they wiped me out of all the Darker pieces. I was surprised to find that someone had come into my yard & taken ALL of them! If only they had asked, I would have given them lots of the lighter Gray Slate... But, Obviously they didn't want them! LOL!

Regards,
 Steve X.
