So I bought a lovely little female Redfooted tortoise on Sunday. She's been a wonder. She's active, healthy, spends most of her time outside in her outdoor enclosure eating grass and weeds, and is even getting warmed up to my presence and following me around. She also has a love for speeding down the sidewalk, occasionally stopping to sniff something potentially yummy in our yard, and munch on it to her heart's content.

This Redfoot was bought at the pet store I work at, though she wasn't ours to begin with. She was a transfer from a sister store, that didn't have the space for her, and was tired of her not selling. Apparently they had her for quite some time. So we took her in.

On Tuesday I was picking her up, and tilted her a bit to see her bottom shell...and it was nasty. ):

I'm not really sure if its 100% shell rot, but what I've read up on it on other sides and seen pictures of, it seems the most likely thing. We keep our Redfoots on mulch, but our sister store isn't that great. I bet they had her on soil.  Angry At least they told us they won't be carrying tortoises anymore due to them not selling well in their area.

Above her legs, on both sides of the bottom shell, a few layers of the shell seem to have rotted away leaving a clearish-opaque layer visible, the border around the rot is white and chalky. Both spots are just slightly larger than a dime, and along her shell there are very teeny tiny specks of what seem to be emerging rot. When I saw this, I went on the and spent a good half hour rushing through websites, and what to do in case of shell rot.

And at 8:30pm and went out and got her the recommended medicine and supplies.

I took out her mulch and layered her cage with a towel, then put some moist Sphagnum moss in her hidey (apparently its slightly acidic, so it helps against the fungus), got some Chlorhexidine solution (because apparently Betadine prohibits new shell growth), a soft children's toothbrush, and some antifungal cream. Twice a day she gets a soft scrubdown with the Chlorhexidine, a rinse, dry, and a thin layer of antifungal cream. I typically set her in her "bath" (a small cat litter pan) and wait until the fungal cream sinks in and dries. Typically she gets a treat (some piece of random veggie) to distract her so she doesn't stress out and poop all over the place.

Now its nearly been a week and I haven't seen too much of an improvement. Anything I'm doing wrong? Does rot like this take a while to start healing? Of course if it gets worse, I'll check her into a vet ASAP. I found the vet listings on this site, and one that was highly recommended in another user's post isn't that far away from me. Smiley Lemme know if I should add anything to this treatment, or hold off on something. I feel kinda stupid I didn't check the bottom of her shell before I bought her, and when I went back to my work to get her moss, I checked the other two, and thankfully they're rot-free. Smiley I just feel a bit dumb I didn't notice it. I kinda feel like one of the uneducated ninnies that buy obviously unhealthy animals. ><

Anyway thank you. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Smiley

I'm not sure how to treat but i know tort shells take a long time to heal. when i got my torts over a year ago they had some spots from pre-existing damage and they are still healing. a few months ago i could tell it was finally healing nicely and regrowing. so it might be awhile.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll get some pictures up later on today (kinda posting right before work).

Well the shell is certainly smooth to the touch, but the rot spots are not squishy. They're pretty hard. No idea of the age, but the length of her shell going longways is slightly over 4 inches long.

I just wanted to ask because every website says something different on how long it takes to heal. Some say 2 days, some say 5-7, some say 2 weeks, and some even say up to a month, or a year! Hahaha, its rather confusing.  Tongue

And within the next week or so, I'm probably going to take her into the vet anyway. She needs to have a check-up. Smiley

Well I can't find my USB port cable for my camera. Sorry, no pics.  Lips sealed

But she has an appointment with Dr. Kemper at VCA Sno-Wood Animal Hospital today at 2:30. She'll get all the check-up she needs. Smiley

That vet office was highly recommended on this site, but just for an FYI, the specific vet, Holly Karter, is no longer there. They recommended me this other vet. Hopefully it goes well!

Hey guys! Here's an update.

The vet said she definitely has shell rot. But its very mild. The exposed areas of her shell are white-opaque, and not pinkish, so its not badly infected. Smiley

She gave me some Betadine and Silver Sulfadizine to put on her once daily. The Betadine is just for 2 weeks, and the cream is up to 8. I'll be seeing her in 4 weeks again to have another checkup.

As for parasites, she got a stool sample and will be letting me know if she has them or not in a few days. Smiley

I'm still a little concerned about the Betadine. I asked my vet about the possible shell growth inhibition, but she said its not that big of a concern, and will kill any sort of microbes a lot faster and more effectively than the Chlorhexidine. Is she right, or should I just use the Betadine for a few days, then switch back to the Chlorhexadine?

All in all it was a very pleasant vet visit. The vet was actually really excited to see my Redfoot (she always tends so see Russians and box turtles, but my Redfoot was a rarity, and she got so excited and fawned her over, hehe), and she was very knowledgeable about them. For someone who sees tons of reptiles every day, I was amazed she knew so much about Redfoots specifically as far as their diet/temps/humidity/size/etc are. She knew her stuff. Smiley

Glad to hear it's only mild. Sounds like you have a great vet. I think you should probably go ahead with her instructions for the Betadine. It's fantastic stuff. I've not used it on any reptiles, but I know it works really well on flesh wounds for cats, dogs, me, etc.

Just an update, I got a call from the vet about an hour ago while I was out shopping. Her fecal sample tested negative for parasites, so hooray! :3

Glad she is doing better and doesn't have parasites. Hope she continues to do well under your care.
